Appearance
The warthog’s body resembles that of a wild boar. The large head is striking: it accounts for one-fifth of the entire body length. The warthog has a long snout and a short, powerful trunk. The lower canines are 40 to 60 inches long and by grinding to a pointed weapon. The eyes are small, the ears narrow and short. Between the eyes and the muzzle there are three pairs of nipples. These give the pig his name. The warthog stands on long, thin legs. It belongs to the pairhorses and has four toes on each foot. The tail can be up to 50 inches long and has a small tassel. The Warthog’s coat is gray and thin. Only in the neck and on the back grows a long, thick mane.
Reproduction and development
Warthogs mate in early summer. The female is ready to mate about every six weeks. His readiness signals it by increased urine output. If a male has successfully recruited a female, the partners usually remain a couple forever. The pregnant female (Bache) retires for the birth of her conspecifics and seeks a sheltered hole in the ground. After about six months, the brook gives birth to an average of two to three young. Since the female has only four teats, she can suckle at most four boars. If it is more, the weakest die.
Lifestyle and behavior
Warthogs are diurnal and very sociable. They usually live together with their family in a so-called rump. Several rumps can also join together to form a large group. Warthogs are very social. They operate intensive skincare and protect each other. Their residential area covers only a few hectares. During the day they go there in search of food, at night and in the hot midday hours they seek refuge in Erdhöhlen. Most of them live in abandoned caves of aardvarks and do not build their own. Although warthogs have no fixed area, they defend their living caves against conspecifics. Warthogs love mud baths; the brown mud serves as the main care and camouflage.
Feeding
Warthogs are omnivores. However, they feed mainly on plants; Grasses and herbs are at the top of their diet. Since they prefer short grasses, they often share their territory with species that feed on the long grasses. This promotes the formation of the short grass. If there is little grass available, the warthogs dig for plant roots. Only rarely are fruits or dead animals eaten. Since the legs of the warthog are very long, it must go to the knees to eat. As it eats, it slips forward on the carpal bones.
